Sujata, Sony's soon-to-be-launched primetime soap, is another addition to the long list of female-centric melodramas. The show features National Award-winning actress Indrani Haldar in the role of a 40-year old wife and mother who feels neglected.
Producer Ravi Chopra says that Sujata finds herself alone after her children and husband get busy with their own lives. "Such a situation arises in almost every woman's life," he adds.
Doesn't the storyline have a striking resemblance to that of Kehna Hai Kuch Mujhko, the channel's earlier show with Pallavi Joshi? Denial mode Chopra denies any similarities. He claims to have never watched Kehna Hai.
"If that was true, why would Sony accept Sujata?" he argues. But Sanjay Upadhyay of Sony acknowledges that the premise of the two shows could be the same.
"Sujata though, isn't only about one woman," he adds. Chopra sheds more light on the plot.
He explains that Sujata has two parallel tracks focusing on single career women, one of whom is a mother. What's a National Award-winning actress doing in a daily soap? Chopra reveals that Haldar and he go back a long way.
"She did Maa Shakti with us and she's a good friend," he says.
